Chinese and Cantonese Input Method User Guide
With the Cangjie - Cantonese input source, you can enter Cantonese characters. Make sure you’re familiar with the Cangjie input code principles and the keyboard layout. On your Mac, first set up the input source (add Cangjie - Cantonese and, if desired, Handwriting - Cantonese). Click the Input menu in the menu bar, then do one of the following. Using a prototype Unicode font and input method in Mac OS X, Apple System Software Engineer John Jenkins sent the world's first cuneiform email to other members of the Initiative for Cuneiform Encoding working group on March 30, 2001.

- On your Mac, first set up the input source (add Cangjie - Cantonese and, if desired, Handwriting - Cantonese).
- Click the Input menu in the menu bar, then do one of the following:
- Choose Cangjie - Cantonese to use the keyboard.If your Mac has a Touch Bar and you customized the Control Strip to add the Input Sources button , tap it to select Cangjie - Cantonese.
- Choose Handwriting - Cantonese to use the trackpad.If your Mac has a Touch Bar and you customized the Control Strip to add the Handwriting button , tap it to select Handwriting - Cantonese. See Use Trackpad Handwriting to write Cantonese.
- In an app, do any of the following:
- Enter Cangjie: Enter the Cangjie codes for the characters you want to use, then press the Space bar to insert each character in your document. If the Candidate window appears, select a character in the window.For example, to enter 蘋果公司, type “廿卜竹金” (tyhc), the Cangjie - Cantonese code for 蘋, then press the Space bar. Follow the same procedure to enter 果 (type “田木”, wd), 公 (type “金戈”, ci), and 司 (type “尸一口”, smr) in order.
- Enter characters when you don’t know complete codes: Use the Z key, the Cangjie function key, in place of any unknown keys.For example, if you aren’t sure of the second key for 蘋, you can enter “廿重竹金” (tzhc). Candidates that match the three known keys are shown in the Candidate window. You can use the key multiple times in the same Cangjie code, as in “廿重竹重” (tzhz).
- Enter English words: Enter an English word, then select the word in the Candidate window . For example, type “ipad”, then select the word in the window. Proper nouns are automatically capitalized.
- Show the keyboard layout: Click the Input menu in the menu bar, then choose Show Keyboard Viewer.If the menu item isn’t shown, choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Keyboard, click Keyboard, then select “Show keyboard and emoji viewers in menu bar.”
You may need to change preferences, for example, to show predictive completions or to change the orientation of the Candidate window.

Sucheng is a simplified version of Cangjie. The first and last keys from a Cangjie code are used as a Sucheng code.
A Sucheng code has fewer keys than Cangjie, but more candidates, so it may take more time to select candidates in the Candidate window.
- On your Mac, first set up the input source (add Sucheng and, if desired, Handwriting - Traditional).
- Click the Input menu in the menu bar, then do one of the following:
- Choose Sucheng to use the keyboard.If your Mac has a Touch Bar and you customized the Control Strip to add the Input Sources button , tap it to select Sucheng.
- Choose Handwriting - Traditional to use the trackpad.If your Mac has a Touch Bar and you customized the Control Strip to add the Handwriting button , tap it to select Handwriting - Traditional. See Use Trackpad Handwriting to write Chinese.
- In an app, type the Sucheng codes for the characters you want to use, then press the Space bar to place each character in your document.
